At the time of writing. It's spring.
And oh, yes, hello and welcome to our site and the family at Mourne Clothing Co.
We don't know about you but we find ourselves right now in a period of seasonal limbo, thirsty for a soulful springtime refill of the good stuff. Sunlight. Clouds. Views. And lots of it. But also still battering with those random cold thrills and rain showers.
Either way - its adventure.
Our experience comes from the mountains that we roam, so here's a quick handy guide to some of our favourite and most-well known routes from the Mourne Mountains, Northern Ireland ...
1. Slieve Donard
Distance: 8 miles (13 km)
Time: 3-5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
Description: Slieve Donard is the highest peak in Northern Ireland at 850 meters. The walk to the summit provides spectacular views over the Mournes and the coastline. The route follows a well-maintained path and has a steady incline, with the final stretch becoming rockier as you near the summit. On clear days, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Mournes, the coastline, and even Scotland.
2. The Mourne Wall Walk
Distance: 10 miles (16 km)
Time: 6-7 hours
Difficulty: Challenging
Description: This circular walk takes you along the iconic Mourne Wall, which stretches for 22 miles, connecting 15 of the Mourne peaks. The route begins at the base of Slieve Donard and climbs over several summits, providing fantastic views of the surrounding landscape. The walk includes a variety of terrain, including rocky paths and some steep sections, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking scenery.
3. Silent Valley Reservoir Loop
Distance: 5 miles (8 km)
Time: 2-3 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Description: For a gentler walk with stunning views, the Silent Valley Reservoir loop is ideal. This walk takes you around the reservoir, offering peaceful views of the Mourne Mountains and the tranquil water. It's a great option for a more relaxed hike, suitable for families or those looking for a less strenuous route.
4. Commedagh and Bearnagh
Distance: 10 miles (16 km)
Time: 5-6 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
Description: This walk is ideal for those wanting to explore two of the Mourne's most impressive peaks. Starting from the Bearnagh car park, the route climbs over Slieve Commedagh and Slieve Bearnagh. Along the way, you’ll experience dramatic mountain landscapes and enjoy panoramic views of the Mournes and beyond.
5. Annalong Wood and River Walk
Distance: 3 miles (5 km)
Time: 1-2 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Description: For a more leisurely stroll, this walk takes you through Annalong Wood, with its beautiful forest trails and river. It's an easy-going route, perfect for a short hike that’s still full of scenic beauty, offering views of the Mournes without the steep climbs.
6. Slieve Binnian
Distance: 7.5 miles (12 km)
Time: 4-5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Description: Slieve Binnian is one of the most popular peaks in the Mournes, offering incredible views from the summit. The walk is a bit more challenging but not as steep as Slieve Donard. The route takes you past the Mourne Wall, offering dramatic views across the valley and surrounding mountains.
7. Tollymore Forest Park Loop
Distance: 4 miles (6.4 km)
Time: 1.5-2 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Description: Located at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, Tollymore Forest Park offers beautiful woodland trails, rivers, and waterfalls. The loop is an easy-to-follow route, perfect for those looking for a pleasant walk with lovely views and peaceful surroundings.
8. Hen Mountain and The Brandy Pad
Distance: 7 miles (11 km)
Time: 3-4 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Description: Hen Mountain is one of the smaller summits in the Mournes, but it offers excellent views. The route combines a climb to the summit with a walk along the historic Brandy Pad, an old smugglers' trail used during the 18th century. The walk is scenic and provides views over the Mournes and the surrounding countryside.
These walks offer a variety of experiences, from challenging summits to more relaxing woodland strolls, all within the stunning Mourne landscape.
